On the evening of April 9th, Good Friday, at least 32 Christians were killed in a camp for Internally Displaced Persons in Benue State. The attack, suspected to have been carried out by Fulani militants, came as people were sleeping.
This internally displaced people (IDP) camp houses nearly 30,000 people, mostly Christians that have fled their villages from previous Fulani militant attacks.
Early reports indicate that many of those killed are women and children.
An Open Doors partner spoke to the chairman of the IDP camp. He said “The militants invaded the camp and started slaughtering people. When they noticed that people became aware of their presence, they started shooting sporadically which resulted in the death of 32 persons.”
Nigeria ranks as the sixth most persecuted country on the 2023 World Watch List. However, it stands as number one in terms of violence against Christians. This is largely due to increasing activity from extremists and militant groups.
Pray
Would you pray for Nigeria today?
- Pray for comfort for those affected and mourning in that IDP camp.
- Pray for the protection and safety of believers in Nigeria who are vulnerable to attacks.
- Pray for local government to enact measures to protect vulnerable communities.
IDP camps like the one pictured (which is not the one attacked) have become more common in Nigeria due to militant activity.
