Demonstrations in Mauritania escalated into threats against the Christian community.
On April 7, 2025, a demonstration in Sélibaby, Mauritania, approved by authorities, escalated into violent threats against Christians. The threats began with a series of posts on social media and intensified during the demonstration, including calls to burn down the homes of Christians.
At one point, an angry mob desecrated a Christian grave, exhumed the body, and dragged it through the streets before reburying it in another village.
Though tensions calmed by evening, hate speech and incitement surged on social media, calling Christians infidels and urging complete social exclusion.
Some Christian leaders were warned by relatives not to contact them for their own safety.
Attacks continue, including violence against Christian children in schools and exclusion from community life. Mauritania has some of the harshest apostasy laws in the world, and Christians are in urgent need of prayer.
Mauritania is number 23 on the 2025 World Watch List.
